Zeal Kingdom (Guardia) 12,000 B.C.
The Dark Ages of Chrono Trigger are beset by the Ice Age brought about by Lavos's fall millions of years earlier. The planet is covered in ice, snow, and tundra, and only in the high reaches of the atmosphere does grass grow on the raised continent of Zeal. Humans exist in both places; those who must depend on backbreaking manual labor for subsistence and cannot use magic live in a complex cave network. Those with the gift of magic live on land masses magically raised and held in the sky. These enlightened domains support verdant plant life, golden cities, and the forefront of man's power and knowledge. Despite their knowledge, the people of Zeal are very prejudiced against the Earthbound, whom they tap for slave labor. Those who have committed grievous crimes or treason are sent to a floating mountain chained to the world below, called Mt. Woe, presided over by a fearsome monster. The Mystics populate this era, though they are confined to the aforementioned mountain and possibly hired as guards of Zeal.
In natural history, Zeal grew too ambitious, and in an effort to achieve immortality awoke Lavos. This was accomplished through the Mammon Machine at the Ocean Palace; it caused the destruction of Zeal. The event stopped the deep freeze that had clutched the planet since prehistoric times, and sparked the reestablishment of topside civilization. Certain people of Zeal survived (though left without innate magic), while the Mystics too somehow avoided death though only one continent remained massive tsunamis caused by Zeal's sinking overtook the others. In the Keystone Timelines, however, the era saw the terrors of Dalton, who had survived the incident and controlled the Blackbird in a bid to establish his own kingdom. The Keystone timelines also saw the Black Omen, which rose most likely due to Schala's choice to save Crono rather than presumably to kill or teleport away her mother. Both troubles were dealt with; the Blackbird was accidentally destroyed by a misfire of the Epoch, and the Black Omen was condemned back to a watery grave.
Guardia 600 A.D.
The Middle Ages of Chrono Trigger are a vision of castles, knights, squires, and magic-wielding Mystics who seek to wage war on mankind. The Kingdom of Guardia is the bastion of resistance in this war, supported by a Cathedral to the west and countless knights who pledge fealty to King Guardia XXI. An order of protectors exist, called the Knights of the Square Table. Ten years prior to 600 A.D., the orer was led by Cyrus, a great warrior who fell to Magus, leader of the Mystic armies, while attempting to retrieve the Masamune. The vacancy was occupied by the gold armor-wearing Knight Captain, rather than Cyrus's squire, Glenn. Although a potent swordsman, Glenn lamented the past events and had been turned into a Frog. The Knight Captain's brother assists Guardia by filling the role of Chef, and is responsible for soldier rations. The war machine of the kingdom is charged with protecting Truce, Dorino, and Porre on the mainland.
On a nearby continent resides Magus's Lair and Ozzie's Fort, central headquarters of the Mystic army. For reasons and motives unknown, the Mystics openly declared war on the human race around 590 A.D. and later invaded southern Zenan, the furthest extent of their front reaching Zenan Bridge.
Guardia 1000 A.D.
The world of the present sees the advent of electricity, radio propagation, and improved forms of travel. Engineers are now building machines, and the Kingdom of Guardia has a trial system. Guardia, though no longer guarded by knights and other facets of the Middle Ages, is still the dominant power in the world. This era is home to three heroes. Crono is a skilled swordsman and heroic spirit; Marle is a rebellious princess and strong-willed; and Lucca is a brilliant scientist whose achievements are unmatched. The Mystics initially hold a grudge with the humans because of the Mystic War, but even this is rectified through the actions of Crono. This is the most peaceful time upon the planet, symbolized by the Millennial Fair, a celebration near Truce of the first millennium since the founding of Guardia. The displaced Guru from Zeal Melchior is in attendance, and the demonstration of science by Lucca and Taban help set in motion the events of Chrono Trigger.
